Our story

Bula means life.

In Fiji, bula is hello, welcome and cheers all at once — it's what you say as you raise a shell of kava. We liked it so much we said it twice.

For centuries, people have gathered around botanical drinks: kava shared from a communal bowl in the Pacific, leaf tea brewed across Southeast Asia, tea houses from China to Morocco. The drinks were never the whole point. They were the reason people sat down together.

BulaBula brings that tradition to Lakewood as a cafe, kava bar and teahouse in one: cozy, communal and zero alcohol, with drinks that relax the body and ease conversation. Stay all day, meet people, cowork, relax.

New to all this? Perfect.

Plenty of people walk in having never tried kava. Here's how a first visit usually goes.

  1. Tell us it's your first time

    No jargon, no judgment. We'll walk you through the menu in plain English and help you pick something that fits your day.

  2. Start with a shell or a Bula Brew

    A 10 oz shell of kava or a 12 oz Bula Brew is the easy way in. Not feeling adventurous yet? A coffee or a hot tea is always a good call.

  3. Give it 15 minutes

    Sip, settle in, and let it arrive. Kava tingles the mouth a little; that's normal. We'll tell you what to expect.

Good questions

What is kava?

Kava is a drink made from the root of the kava plant, shared across the Pacific Islands for centuries. It's earthy and calming, it eases conversation, and it contains no alcohol. We serve it the traditional way, by the shell.

What is kratom?

Kratom is a traditional leaf tea from Southeast Asia, made from the leaves of a tree in the coffee family. We brew it by strain: white for lift, green for balance, red for ease, and gold, our house mix of all three. It isn't for everyone — it's served to guests 21 and over, it can be habit-forming with regular use, and it's not for use during pregnancy or with alcohol or sedatives.

Are you in Denver?

We're at 195 S Union Blvd, Suite 150 in Lakewood, just west of Denver, and an easy drive from Golden, Arvada, Wheat Ridge and Littleton. We're opening soon; planned hours are 11am to midnight, seven days a week.

Is there alcohol?

None, ever. BulaBula is a cafe, kava bar and teahouse in one, with zero alcohol, so you get the warmth of a neighborhood hangout without the hangover.

Can I work from BulaBula?

Yes. The room is made for staying all day. Bring your laptop, order a tea or a coffee, and settle in for as long as you need. We're opening soon; planned hours are 11am to midnight, seven days a week.

Do I need to be 21?

Kava, kratom and extract shots are served to guests 21 and over, so please bring a valid ID.

Can I just get a coffee or tea?

Of course. Coffee is self-pour, in light, medium and dark roasts, and we serve a variety of bagged teas, hot. More coffee drinks are coming soon.

What are extract shots?

Concentrated kava, poured as a single shot or a triple. They're strong, so go slow — if it's your first visit, start with a shell or a Bula Brew instead.

How much does a drink cost?

About what you'd pay at a coffee shop. Most drinks are $5 to $8.

21+ for kava and kratom tea. Not for use during pregnancy or with alcohol or sedatives. Please drink responsibly.

    We're opening soon; planned hours are 11am to midnight, seven days a week. Come for a coffee at noon and you're welcome to still be here at 11pm.

  • Meet people

    Communal by design. Come alone, order a shell, and leave knowing somebody.

  • Cowork

    Bring the laptop. Order a tea, find a spot, and get things done with people around you.

  • Relax

    Or do nothing at all. A relaxing drink, a comfortable seat, and no pressure to be anywhere else.
